Chicago Park District (CPD)

The Future of Infrastructure

Since 2000, AECOM has been a trusted partner to CPD on its 26 miles (42 kilometers (km)) of lakefront. Marquis projects include the award-winning 31st Street Harbor, where AECOM transformed an underused portion of Chicago’s Lake Michigan shoreline into a new public amenity.

Located in the Bronzeville neighborhood, the 31st Street Harbor incorporates extensive community amenities funded by revenues from the new 800 slip marina, including a two acre green space located on a peninsula of land formed by the 1,200-foot-long (366 meters) breakwater sheltering the new harbor, providing exceptional views of the Chicago skyline to the north.

North of downtown on the lakefront, AECOM developed an expanded and improved shoreline along a 2,000-foot-long (610 meters) reach of the Chicago shoreline, known as Fullerton Theater on the Lake. This new six-acre (2.4 hectare) park expansion mitigates flooding along Lake Shore Drive and built better access from the park to the beach areas. AECOM also assisted with the public transportation process, enhancing users to transportation links.

To freely and easily move residents and visitors along the lakefront trail system, AECOM improved 18 miles (29 km) of the path by separating the walking/running pedestrians from bicyclists. The Lakefront Trail Separation project alleviates congestion by optimizing available open space and creating logical pathways and interconnections.
