The Future of Infrastructure

As Sydney continues to grow rapidly, maintaining efficient transport connections from two key infrastructure assets, Sydney Airport and Port Botany, to the city and other major centres and freight terminals is increasingly crucial to strengthening Sydney’s position as a leading global city.

Sydney Gateway is a two-pronged approach, comprising both road and rail improvements, to easing these transport connections and, importantly, to increasing capacity on these vital routes. NSW Transport Roads & Maritime Services will deliver the road improvements while the Australia Rail Track Corporation (ARTC) will deliver the rail portion.

Road

The road improvements include: a new route to the domestic and international airport terminals from the Sydney motorway network; and a new, dedicated flyover from Qantas Drive to the front door of the domestic airport terminals, which will bypass all traffic lights along major Sydney motorway networks to the domestic terminals. These improvements are expected to reduce travel times to the airport by between 22 minutes from Campbelltown up to 41 minutes from Dee Why.

Rail

The rail upgrades comprise a duplication of a three-kilometre section of the Port Botany freight rail track, which will both increase capacity in response to future demand and also improve service reliability.
